Workshop on New Developments in Strongly Correlated Electron Systems

September 19 – 21, 2009

Introduction

The discovery of many materials with novel electronic properties provides a major challenge to theoretical condensed matter physics. The central task lies in the identification and understanding of the electronic phases of such materials, spanning the range from microscopic modelling to phenomenological description. While we possess well-established theories for standard electronic phases (simple metals, semiconductors, conventional superconductors, magnets etc) a large number of materials cannot be classified within these categories and require new theoretical concepts and approaches. They belong mainly to the class of strongly correlated electron systems. In particular, the low-energy physics of such systems cannot be derived easily by ab-initio methods, but has often to be approximated by effective models, whose solution pose challenging problems on their own.

The goal of this workshop of three days is to bring leading scientists in the field together in order to discuss newest developments and also to encourage new collaborations. This workshop is a joined activity between Switzerland and Japan and has a long tradition going back to the early nineties. In the past it had been funded by various organizations in Japan and Switzerland, such as SNF, PSI, the Japanese Kakenhi (JSPS) and NEDO etc. This year’s workshop will be devoted to one of the initiators of the joint workshop series, Kazuo Ueda, who celebrates his 60th birthday this year.
